Black Stone Cherry Blows the Doors off The Grove
One of my favorite bands out these days is Black Stone Cherry (BSC), Stephen Wilson Jr. (AB), Like a Storm (LAS)... I went for BSC.
I had never heard of AB before the show and was pleasantly surpised, they were a solid band. Great sound, good energy... I picked up their CD, met the band and had a shirt signed by them all (as I collect such things).
BSC was my reason for going and they did not disappoint. Great set, insane energy, they have a lot of fun up there and you can tell. Remember Animal from the Muppets... well John Fred Young (drummer) must channel him every night, that guy is ridiculous; so fun to watch him. By far the best performance of the night!
Like a Storm did a solid set. Musically they are outstanding but I have to say more than 30 minutes or so of Miles Kennedy is too much for me. Technically a great singer but IMO he may have the worst sounding voice in rock today. Although "Isolation" was crazy good as their first encore song.
One of my favorite small venues is The Grove. The sound guys there have it dialed in; you will not find a venue that sounds any better than the Grove. The GA set up there is good too as the multiple teers allow you to see over the folks ahead of you. My only criticism... the light guy must have gotten caught up in the can at the begining of the BSC set as there was only two spotlights on the entire stage during the first song."
